Increase produce consumption with some old, new ideas

I never think I am 100% right but when it has come to the produce business spotting trends, markets I have been right more often than wrong. I also always reserve the right to change my position when facts or changes in direction become apparent that reexamination and change of position is warranted. I also never blindly followed the masses and always formulated my own positions. Anyone who has been reading my reports for the past 20 plus years knows how I feel about large retail, pricing, displays and merchandising and the failures of large retail when it came to produce. The good news it has been slowly changing for the better and with the current environment it’s hard to be a failure with this unprecedented demand. Keep in mind, hopefully this virus will not last forever, things will become more normal, competition for consumers will be back and although some things are slowly changing for the better, we still have a long way to go. Some of the things I will discuss in this week’s video, have you ever noticed that when a large chain buys a successful independent chain, the larger tries to turn the independent into them instead of visa versa and usually they will be less successful under the new banner. Or the produce director that goes from a bankrupt or failing chain and is hired by another chain to implement his or her strategy, SMH. I have seen all of these scenarios in my career. Also Produce for better health want’s to increase consumption to consumers which is a great goal, through behavior modification and other high tech mechanisms, I want to help with some tried and true old school solutions that have worked in all economies and in all neighborhoods from poor to wealthy. The only thing to fear in this red pepper market is that demand will come off because prices are very high.

On the supply side I loaded our first Fullerton load and we will load a Fresno load tomorrow. On the Mexican side, last weeks

blockade upset supplies, I still have a load from Friday that has not crossed. I will fill in with Mexican’s as long as necessary

or until the quality is gone. Keep in mind we all owe these growers some help, if needed, because without Mexican reds we 

would have had none these previous few weeks. So please, if I have to load some more, try to remember, they helped us and now we may have to help

them. Keep in mind although we have new California peppers there is very hot weather forecasted for this coming week, which will burn up  some peppers

and drop supplies. Keep all this in mind going forward. In the terminals I still believe that 15# reds will bring $30 plus but the high prices may take the edge

off to be in that $35 range. Big box will still be $35 plus on choice. We also have Yellow peppers with prices in the same range.
