Food waste worse in the future
Food waste going to be worse in the future.
Technology is a wonderful thing. In the past 20 years it has increased our ability to produce quality crops with greater yields and with less acreage. In the past few years we have seen Packaging, coatings and packets placed in boxes to increase the shelf life of these products. The caveat is the way retail produce is being currently sold has not kept up with these advances. Retail wants production of fresh produce to cost less and less but the still maintain their current high markups with the reduced costs. How will retail react to fresh produce that last longer but with increased production? Will the start moving produce faster from farmer to consumer or slow it down because it last on their shelves longer? If the do the later what do we do with the increased production? Something to think about going forward.
